Chargers

A good charger is crucial to electric vehicle performance. Early crude chargers simply slugged voltage into the batteries until the charger was turned off. This caused the batteries to gas heavily toward the end of the charge, and it shortened battery life. Later chargers used timers to taper the charge down and shut off. These were better, but still did not fully synchronize with the needs of the batteries. Modern chargers can sense the level of charge in the battery pack, and taper the charging current accordingly. The final, low-current part of the charge cycle serves to equalize the charge in all the batteries.

For low voltage conversions (up to 144 V), 110VAC input is acceptable. For higher voltage systems (up to 336 V), the 220VAC is needed. The chargers below offer a range of options.

SC 18-120 Charger With Standard Footprint

The transformerless Russco Safety Electric Vehicle Battery Chargers provide onboard charging of both flooded and sealed lead acid battery systems from 84 volts to 144 volts. A buck/boost transformer is used with the charger to charger 132 volt or 144 volt systems, or to charge 84 volt or 96 volt systems faster. These chargers provide adjustable constant current to 80% charge, adjustable constant voltage, then minimum current to finish. A digital shut-off option will shut off the charger completely.

The Zivan Battery Charger is a compact state-of-the-art high frequency, high efficiency industrial unit. It has an aluminum base and ABS cover, and internal cooling fans. It can be configured by the distributor for any one of many battery charging profiles. Pack voltage and battery model must be specified when ordering. No user adjustment is necessary. It comes in either 110VAC or 220VAC input and various DC outputs, depending on model.
